Texas Tech Defensive Back’s Status Now in Question

Joey McGuire addressed the media on Monday regarding the legal incident involving Texas Tech cornerback Amier Boyd-Matthews, explaining that the program will “handle it internally.” Boyd-Matthews, a UTEP transfer who joined the Red Raiders in December, was arrested this past weekend by Lubbock police on a reckless driving charge in the 2700 block of 3rd Street.

McGuire offered no details on the timing of resolution or possible consequences, only that the team has responded under its long-standing internal disciplinary framework.

Boyd-Matthews has been part of the Red Raiders’ defensive rotation through the first two games. He recorded an interception in the Week 1 win over Arkansas-Pine Bluff and made his first start of the season in Week 2’s victory over Kent State, positioning himself as a contributor in the secondary.

Under Texas law, reckless driving is considered a misdemeanor. A conviction can carry penalties that include a fine of up to $200, up to 30 days in county jail, or both. The charge arises when a person operates a vehicle with willful disregard for the safety of people or property. That framework will be part of any legal process Boyd-Matthews now faces outside of whatever measures the football program takes internally.

McGuire’s assurance that the team will manage the situation without public elaboration suggests disciplinary precedent and matters of personnel evaluation will dictate Boyd-Matthews’ availability moving forward. For now, he remains with the team, and the internal review is underway.

Fans and media will be watching closely as the Red Raiders step into Big 12 play, particularly to see whether the incident affects Boyd-Matthews’ presence on the field or alters the defensive rotation. His status could provide significant insight into how Texas Tech balances conduct issues with maintaining competitive depth in a new conference environment.
