The Texas Tech Red Raiders and coach Joey McGuire have been busy improving their roster for 2025 after a disappointing end to 2024 with a Liberty Bowl loss to the Razorbacks.
McGuire & Co. have been busy utilizing the transfer portal and conventional recruiting to build a roster to compete for a Big 12 title next season.
It doesn't stop with the players, as Tech is rebuilding part of its coaching staff too. On Monday, McGuire announced the promotion of defensive analyst Darcel McBath to cornerbacks coach.
McBath served in that role for the Liberty Bowl last month on an interim basis. The 39-year-old Gainesville, Texas, native played corner for the Red Raiders from 2004-08 - and was named First Team All-Big 12 in 2008 - before being drafted in the second round by the Denver Broncos in 2009.
His promotion comes after the hiring of Shiel Wood as defensive coordinator and the decision to split the defensive secondary coaching responsibilities. New safeties coach Rob Greene, who was hired on Friday, will coach the safeties while McBath manages the corners.
McBath spent four seasons in the NFL and split time between the Broncos, Jags and 49ers before joining the North Texas Mean Green as a defensive quality control intern in 2016. He then coached for Washington State and Mississippi State before signing on with the Red Raiders in 2024 as a defensive analyst.
