Texas Tech snags potentially the most elite five-star recruit in school history

Head coach Joey McGuire is tasked with turning things around at Texas Tech. So far, not so good for the Red Raiders. They're 0-2 with their schedule featuring a loss to a Mountain West squad, Wyoming.

Things are a bit brighter on the recruiting trail for Tech, though. In fact, McGuire and his staff have got to be brimming with excitement regarding their newest commitment, 5-star wide receiver Micah Hudson.

For all intents and purposes, Hudson may be the most regarded commitment in Texas Tech history.

Hudson committed to Texas on Monday over the likes of Texas, Texas A&M and Alabama. That's a big deal in and of itself, but then there are the rankings to consider.

According to the 247Sports Composite, Hudson is the No. 2 wideout in the 2024 class and he's the No. 9 ranked recruit nationally. ESPN considers him the highest-ranked prospect to ever sign with the Red Raiders since its rankings began in 2006.

McGuire went 8-5 in his first season as Texas Tech head coach and to be fair, the Red Raiders have been very competitive so far in 2023. They took No. 13 Oregon to the wire this past weekend in a 38-30 loss.

It's the attitude of McGuire's program that really won Hudson over.

“It’s the culture, how they are as a people, and it’s not just for show,” Hudson told On3, explaining why he committed to Texas Tech.

“They’re ready to work and they don’t put on any faces. It’s the same every time I go there, and even though I’m a good player and don’t care about a lot of that stuff, they’ve been the same way since they offered me. This new staff just has fun. I can have fun and can be myself. I never feel uncomfortable there.

"I don’t feel four hours away … I feel like I’m at home.”

Hudson is from Temple, Texas, and plays for Lake Belton High School.

Through three games so far this season, he's caught 17 passes for 317 yards and three touchdowns. He notched 1,198 receiving yards and 14 touchdowns as a junior.
