‘That’s what blew my mind’: Urban Meyer sets the record straight on how Deion Sanders is running Colorado

Deion Sanders is entering a new era as the head coach at Colorado, with neither of his sons playing as part of the program.

Colorado has shown improvement in each of Sanders’ first two seasons leading the program. The all-time great athlete turned coach took over a Buffaloes team that went 1–11 in 2022. After improving to 4–8 in 2023, Shedeur Sanders then led the team to a nine-win season last year. Now, with both sons chasing NFL careers, it’ll be interesting to watch the next chapter of the Colorado program.

The Buffaloes have improved in nearly every aspect under Sanders, though the program does receive some flack for its “fame-first” reputation. Former national championship-winning head coach Urban Meyer recently offered some insight into Sanders’ program and helped set the record straight on the ship he has sailing.

“I got to go backstage and watched them practice,” Meyer said on The Triple Option podcast. “I see the watches and the cars and all of the flash — it’s just not me. But when I saw what went on behind the scenes, there is a culture there. He’s tough on them, man. He’s demanding of that team. That’s what blew my mind.”

Meyer admitted he was surprised by how practices are run at Colorado. While the media-facing side of the program often shows the gold chains and flashy cars, Meyer emphasized that Sanders is doing things the right way behind the scenes.

“There’s no waste of time. They went out to work and they left,” Meyer added. “In between those two hours, it was go time. I’ve been to other teams’ practices where I thought they’re wasting time.”

Sanders brought in a top-ranked transfer class and a top-25 recruiting class this past cycle. With Shedeur and Shiloh now gone, all eyes will be on what his program looks like moving forward.
