This is a very interesting season for Heisman Trophy candidates. Mostly because we are now at the end of October and there still isn’t a clear favorite. But there should be, and his name is Haynes King. What he has done for No. 7 Geogia Tech (8-0) this season is special, and it is time more people acknowledge it.
Today’s performance during a 41-16 victory over Syracuse was a perfect example of King’s talents. He completed 25 of 31 passes for 304 yards, three touchdowns and no interceptions while leading the team in rushing with 91 yards and two touchdowns on 12 carries.
While this was King’s top passing performance of the season, overall, it was a somewhat average day for him this season. He has now completed 73% of his passes for 1,480 yards, seven touchdowns and one interception. On the ground he averages 5.8 yards per carry with 651 yards and 12 touchdowns.
This production makes King the leading passer and rusher for the undefeated and No. 7 team in the country. Also, his 12 rushing touchdowns is more than the rest of the team combined (11).
Up next for Georgia Tech are two road games at North Carolina State and Boston College before a return home to play a revitalized Pittsburgh team. An undefeated ACC regular season is very possible, which would send the Yellow Jackets to the conference championship game.
However, before that game would happen there will be another huge challenge that will give King the opportunity to win over plenty of Heisman voters. Georgia Tech will host No. 5 Georgia on November 28th. Last year during a 44-42 eight overtime loss to the Bulldogs, King completed 26 of 36 passes for 303 yards, two touchdowns and no interceptions while rushing for 110 yards and three touchdowns. Another performance like this in November is what he needs to solidify his chances of winning the Heisman.
But when it comes to right now, King deserves to be the Heisman leader. Many players are vital to their teams succcess, but no player means more to their team than King.
