Unless you have been living under a rock, the Tennessee Volunteers said goodbye to their starting quarterback Nico Iamaleava over contractual differences over the weekend. The money wasn’t the breaking point in the end. This whole situation was centered around lies, leveraging, and mismanaging relationships.
After the dust settled, several things became very transparent. This is unquestionably just the beginning of contract holdouts in college football, and things are only going to get more chaotic moving forward. We also gained some unique clarity into the Notre Dame quarterback situation, which was a surprise discovery in this groundbreaking situation.
The Fighting Irish are amidst their first true quarterback battle in a very long time. Between Steve Angeli, Kenny Minchey, and CJ Carr, there is confidence that head coach Marcus Freeman and Mike Denbrock have everything they need to find a dynamic signal caller heading into 2025. Most are excited about the potential that room brings.
In a recently sourced article from A to Z Sports, we went deep into the background of the Iamaleava situation. Before the winter transfer portal had opened several months ago, the Iamaleava camp had put out feelers behind the scenes to see what programs might be interested if the talented signal caller chose to enter. Notre Dame was a school that was contacted.
The Irish program quickly made it known that they weren’t interested in Iamaleava. In fact, they weren’t interested in any transfer quarterback this offseason, contrary to the nonsense people put out there. For the first time since Coach Freeman took over the program, they had a room they were comfortable with filled with homegrown talent. There was no need to add veteran talent.
On paper, Iamaleava is a very appealing talent. The 6-6, 215-pound passer was a former five-star prospect, and he did just help to lead the Volunteers to 10 wins in 2024. While he’s inconsistent, there certainly is a lot of talent to develop. His 2,616 yards passing and 22 touchdowns are, in theory, just a small sample size for how good Iamaleava could be.
The fact that Notre Dame dismissed the possibility so quickly tells you all you need to know about their confidence in the room. Whichever quarterback ends up winning the job, the staff clearly believed in them. Coach Freeman and this stuff has brought back the quality of that quarterback room, which is the most important position in sports.
