Alabama football’s secondary returns multiple players with starter experience.

Domani Jackson, Zabien Brown, Bray Hubbard and Keon Sabb all returned to the Crimson Tide, and each of them started in multiple games throughout the 2024 season.

They will undoubtedly be a part of Alabama’s rotation this season at cornerback and safety and are the likely starters at those respective positions at the moment.

However, a position that remains up for grabs within the Tide’s secondary is the Husky position. This position is a hybrid safety role in Kane Wommack’s 4-2-5 scheme.

DeVonta Smith occupied the role for most of the 2024 season before transferring to Notre Dame. DaShawn Jones and Red Morgan also earned some experience there in 2024. Morgan was in the rotation throughout the season and Jones earned more snaps as the season progressed, ultimately starting in the role against Michigan in the ReliaQuest Bowl.

There is a competition at the position at the moment, per Wommack.

“That is a very versatile position,” Wommack said. “It’s similar to the wolf and all the things that we ask that position to do, and yet at the same time very different. That guy’s got to be able to fit the runs. He’s got to be able to play man. He’s got to be able to play zone coverage and blitz off the edge and all that stuff. Consistent execution is critical. That player can really eliminate part of the field if they do their job in terms of perimeter blocking and teams that try to throw perimeter screens out there if you got a husky, they can they can take the field space away. I think we’ve got a number of guys that seem to be doing a really good job right now. So, pleased with where those guys are going and are really like the competition going on.”

Jones is arguably the favorite to start at the position.

Morgan has primarily worked at cornerback since the spring, which makes his expected role in 2025 intriguing. Dre Kirkpatrick was named as a player, who made strides playing the position in the spring.

Whoever wins this starting role has a chance to be super impactful in 2025 for the Tide.
