Three Spartans to Know Ahead of Their Matchup With Texas
Eakin Howard-Imagn Images

As it is now Friday night, both teams are a little over 12 hours away from their second game of the season, and both teams will be looking for their first win of the season.

San Jose State may have started the season with a loss to Central Michigan, but that doesn’t mean that they don’t have talent on the field, although maybe not quite the level of talent that Texas has. But writing teams off like that is what leads to losses.

So here are three San Jose State players that everyone needs to look out for.

QB Walker Eget

After only starting seven games, but appearing in 12 for the Spartans last year, Eget managed to acquire 2,504 yards and 13 touchdowns. Eget is essential in San Jose State’s “spread and shred” offense.

Eget is now a senior and will be out to make a name for himself before his college career ends, and he has the talent to do so. Last season, he threw for a career-high of 446 yards on a 68% completion rate against Boise State.

In the first game of the season, he threw for 303 yards and two touchdowns, but he also threw two picks. The Texas defense will have to ensure that it shuts down the air attack and forces the Spartans to utilize the ground game.

RB Floyd Chalk IV

Although Chalk did not stand out too much in the loss last week, only rushing for 44 yards, he is also a senior who will be looking to improve on a season in which he had over 750+ all-purpose yards.

Each season with San Jose State, he’s improved on his performance from before. If Texas can shut down the air attack, then they’ll have to deal with Chalk, but the hope is that the Longhorns’ defensive line will be too much for the Spartans.

Eget is not much of a factor with his legs, so it’ll be up to Chalk for the most part to get it going, but fans shouldn’t be surprised if he does end up breaking off a couple of big runs.

WR Danny Scudero

Yes, another offensive player. This third spot could arguably be given to LB Jordan Pollard, but wide receiver Danny Scudero has already put the college football world on notice with his Week 1 performance.

Even in a 14-16 loss, Scudero caught the ball nine times for 189 yards and a touchdown, and he’s only a sophomore. As a freshman last season, he brought in 52 catches for over 650 yards and five touchdowns as a freshman.

Scudero is replacing WR Nick Nash, who is now in the NFL and set the 2024 receiving triple crown record, which recognizes the receiver with the most receptions, receiving yards, and touchdowns in all of college football.

If Scudero can be the replacement for Nash, then San Jose State won’t have a hard time getting the spread and shed offense going.
