Tim Tebow Names SEC Team Flying Under the Radar

Few stories in the 2025 college football season are more surprising than what’s happening in Starkville, Mississippi.

The Mississippi State Bulldogs, a team that stumbled to a 2-10 record a year ago, have already doubled their win total and sit at 4-0 entering Week 5. The Bulldogs’ turnaround has included a dramatic upset over the then-No. 12 Arizona State Sun Devils, and their new confidence has the SEC taking notice.

On SEC Network's "SEC Nation," Tim Tebow urged fans not to overlook Mississippi State, praising the team’s tempo, heart and grit. With the No. 15 Tennessee Volunteers set to visit Starkville this weekend, the Bulldogs have a chance to prove him right.

"I'll tell you who people should be talking about is Mississippi State," Tebow said. "It could be one of the biggest turnarounds in the entire country. Now, you have this Tennessee team going to 'Starkvegas,' and the cowbells will be rocking. But you better not look past Mississippi State. What they are doing with their tempo, with their heart, with their grit, this team is so different from what they were last year."

The Bulldogs are led by senior quarterback Blake Shapen, who has thrown for 884 yards, seven touchdowns and two interceptions, completing 67% of his passes. Additionally, the team features a strong running back duo in Fluff Bothwell and Davon Booth.

Bothwell has rushed for 271 yards and four touchdowns, while Booth has contributed 149 yards and three touchdowns. The team currently ranks No. 39 in total offense, No. 31 in rushing offense, No. 66 in passing offense, and No. 26 in scoring offense.

Mississippi State has already shown grit and resilience, shaking off last season’s struggles to emerge as a dangerous opponent in the SEC. With Shapen leading the charge and a backfield capable of controlling games, the Bulldogs have built a formula for surprising opponents.

Tebow’s praise reflects how quickly perceptions are changing for Jeff Lebby's team. If Mississippi State can add Tennessee to its list of victims, the conversation around the Bulldogs will shift from early-season surprise to legitimate SEC contender.

Mississippi State will take on Tennessee at 4:15 p.m. ET on the SEC Network.
