Don’t count Tom Brady among those considering jumping off the Arch Manning hype train following Texas’ loss to Ohio State last weekend.
During an appearance on Cris Collinsworth’s podcast earlier this week, Brady urged Manning to use his rough season-opening performance as the motivation needed to succeed at quarterback. Ohio State held Manning to 17-of-30 passing for 170 yards, a touchdown, and an interception in a 14-7 Buckeyes victory.
Although Texas outgained Ohio State 336-215, the Longhorns only completed one of their five fourth-down tries.
“If he uses this to his advantage, Arch, he’s going to be tougher for it and he’s going to have a better next game because of it,” Brady said. “And I always felt like you’ve got to deal with a lot of adversity from a quarterback standpoint to toughen you up to be the true leader for the organization.”
Barring an injury or a completely unexpected decision on coach Steve Sarkisian’s part, Manning will draw the start against San Jose State on Saturday afternoon. He’ll also likely start against UTEP and Sam Houston State before the Longhorns open SEC play against the Florida Gators on Oct. 4.
In other words, it’s still way too early to know if the Manning we saw struggle against Ohio State is the same player we’ll see in conference play. To his credit, Brady didn’t make any guarantees on Manning’s future or dismiss a poor opener as the result of nerves or play-calling.
“It’s going to be up to him to see how he really wants to dig within himself and how deep he wants to dig in order to be successful,” Brady told Collinsworth.
Brady added that there’s no reason for him to believe that Manning won’t be successful, especially not three starts into his career. By the end of September, we’ll see if Manning took Brady’s advice to heart.
