Tom Brady tried to do a big favor for Bill Belichick and the North Carolina Tar Heels, but it didn't work

Things aren't going very well for Bill Belichick in his first season as the head coach of the North Carolina Tar Heels.

Belichick is 2-3 in his first five games in Chapel Hill, which includes blowout losses to TCU, UCF, and Clemson.

Beyond the on-the-field struggles, there's an abundance of off-the-field drama -- such as the recent canceling of a planned behind-the-scenes documentary on Hulu -- that's plaguing Belichick.

It's so bad at UNC under Belichick that the program released a statement of support for the longtime coach after rumors swirled that the two sides were on the verge of a breakup.

Anyone who has followed college football for any length of time knows that a statement of support can be the kiss of death for a football coach.

North Carolina could've been in a better spot under Belichick through the first month of the season had former NFL quarterback Tom Brady been successful in his attempt to help the program.

Brady, who won six Super Bowls with Belichick during their time together with the New England Patriots, tried to help North Carolina land transfer quarterback John Mateer last winter (according to The Athletic).

Mateer transferred from Washington State to Oklahoma after the 2024 season.

"Mateer had other suitors, too. Tom Brady and Rob Gronkowski FaceTimed to pitch him on Bill Belichick and North Carolina," wrote The Athletic's Chris Vannini.

Oklahoma always made sense for Mateer due to the fact that Ben Arbuckle, his offensive coordinator from Washington State, was hired by the Sooners last offseason.

But I'm sure the pitch from Brady at least gave Mateer something to think about.

In the end, though, not even Brady, arguably the greatest quarterback of all time, could help Belichick land one of the most coveted transfers in college football.
