Florida State was in a difficult situation at the end of the 2023 season. Star quarterback and Heisman Finalist Jordan Travis' season ended with an injury against Northern Alabama. Backup quarterback Tate Rodemaker and AJ Duffy entered the NCAA Transfer Portal, leaving true freshman Brock Glenn to start in the Orange Bowl with a highly depleted roster.
The Seminoles need to bring in a transfer quarterback next season regardless of Glenn, a sophomore next year, and promising 4-star recruit Luke Kromenhoek signing with the 2024 class. The two top candidates on the FSU radar were Oregon State quarterback DJ Uiagalele and Washington State quarterback Cam Ward.
One of those names will be off the Seminole dartboard as Ward announced on January 1 that he will declare for the 2024 NFL Draft. The news shouldn't sting Florida State as much as it does the Miami Hurricanes, who were projected to land the talented transfer prospect in the offseason.
Ward accounted for 3,735 passing yards, 27 touchdowns, and seven interceptions in 2023 while adding 144 yards and eight more scores on the ground. After transferring from the University of Incarnate Word, Ward spent two seasons with the Cougars.
Uiagalele is now the Seminoles' primary target, and a report released this past week suggests that the likelihood of landing him is becoming increasingly a reality.
