Travis Hunter might not take too long to adjust to defense at the NFL level. The Heisman Trophy winner out of Colorado plans to play both ways in the pros as well, but is primarily a wide receiver as OTAs roll on.
The Jaguars, who traded up to select Hunter No. 2 overall, want him to play offense and defense. But first, they’ll integrate him on offense while bringing him along slowly on defense.
But Hunter already made a highlight reel interception during practice. If this is what to come, Jacksonville could have a franchise icon down the line. You can see the play below.

Since Hunter arrived in Jacksonville in April, quarterback Trevor Lawrence has been able to see first-hand what Hunter is capable of. It’s expected of them to quickly gain chemistry on and off the field, and he offered his first impressions of the two-way star back in May.
“Got a lot of juice, like he can run all day,” Lawrence told reporters. “A lot of energy. I love it. Good energy. Always dapping guys up, just bringing juice every day. Like I said, high motor. Can just go. It’s like a kid just runs around all day. He doesn’t get tired, it seems like. So you can’t have enough of that. And then, as far as just talent, I mean, kind of speaks for itself. Ball skills, run after the catch, he’s very explosive. Just didn’t realize how explosive he was in and out of cuts. He’s impressive to watch.”
Funny enough, Lawrence is going to have to watch out for Hunter on defense as well. If he’s practicing throwing the ball into tight windows or trying to beat defenders, Hunter is trying to pick off the very quarterback who’s getting used to throwing him the football as a WR. Ironic isn’t it?
Hunter joins Brian Thomas Jr., who is coming off a near 1,300-yard receiving season as a rookie, in the receivers room in Jacksonville. Thomas caught 10 touchdown passes and played in all 17 games for the Jaguars. The next closest receiver on last year’s roster was tight end Brenton Strange with 411 yards. Safe to say, Hunter brings the “juice” to the offense.
On defense in two years at Colorado, Hunter grabbed seven interceptions and 16 pass deflections. He also had a forced fumble, three tackles for loss and 66 total tackles.
