Oklahoma is 5-1 and enjoying a successful season, despite just suffering their first loss of the season to rival Texas. And because of that, head coach Brent Venables has quieted some of the critics, at least for now. However, a statement he made yesterday during a press conference is gaining plenty of attention:

And that attention has not been positive. Venables was in charge of the Sooners during their final two seasons in the Big 12, including a 6-7 season in 2022 when the Sooners had a 3-6 conference record. Overall, during these two seasons the Sooners lost to every Big 12 team except Iowa State.

This is the opposite of destroying everybody, in fact, with a 10-8 conference record over those two seasons, it was more about being average.

It is possible that when Venables mentioned “old Big 12 days” he meant much older. Because there was a time when Oklahoma did steamroll conference teams, and some of those years were when Venables was the defensive coordinator in Norman, Okla. from 1999 to 2011.

But if that is the case, then he should’ve been more specific, because now he just seems as though he has short-term memory or suffered amnesia.

This has been a good season for Oklahoma through six games, but Venables’ comment won’t be added to the highlight reel at the end of the season.
