TRENDING: Deion Sanders Excited About Coaching Hire

Even before his days at Jackson State, Coach Deion Sanders had long been a supporter of HBCU football. While he is now with Colorado, that still continues, as shown by his response to Bowling Green’s decision to hire Eddie George as their new head coach.

George was a first-time head coach at Tennessee State, an HBCU, but had quietly pieced together a very nice resume. This included being named the Big South-Ohio Valley Conference Coach of the Year after the 2024 season, which saw the Tigers make the FCS playoffs for the first time since 2013.

George still has a long way to go before he is seen as a better coach than a player, after an illustrious career on the field at both Ohio State and then the NFL. With the Buckeyes he rushed for 3,578 yards and 43 touchdowns, before rushing for 10,441 yards and 68 touchdowns during an NFL career that was mostly spent with the Tennessee Titans.

Coach Sanders and Coach George did coach against one another twice at the FCS level with Sanders’ Tigers winning 38-16 in 2021 and 16-3 in 2022. Could a future game be scheduled between the Buffaloes and Falcons to get a third matchup? Sure, but it would have to wait until at least 2029 since Colorado’s out-of-conference schedule is set until then.
