With the season quickly approaching, one would think that the focus would be on the football field. But that doesn’t seem to be the case for North Carolina head coach Bill Belichik and his girlfriend, Jordan Hudson.
According to this story by Darren Rovell, a company owned by Belichick and managed by Hudson has filed a trademark for the term “Gold Digger,” which Rovell says will be used for jewelry and key chains.
There was no good time for an announcement like this, but five days before the start of the season is likely the worst possible time. The off-season was full of Belichick and Hudson stories, but that thankfully died down as the season approached. That all likely changed with this information.
“Gold Digger” is not a complimentary term. It instead refers to someone that is in a relationship only for financial gain. Considering the age gap between Belichick (73) and Hudson (24), plus the estimation that the Hall of Fame head coach is worth between $60-$70M, this hits too close to home.
Maybe this will be swept under the carpet in the coming hours and days. Maybe this was all Hudson’s idea. Maybe Belichick is finding out about this today. Whatever the truth is, someone made a bad decision. Not only because of the decision to use the term “Gold Digger” but also because of the timing.
But it also shouldn’t be a surprise. North Carolina signed up attention, publicity and wins. They’re definitely gotten the first two, and now everyone is very close to finding out if the third will happen.
