Trevor Lawrence quote circulating on Internet about White House food was fake
Brad Mills-USA TODAY Sports

Trevor Lawrence may have enjoyed the fast-food spread that president Donald Trump put out at the White House when the Clemson football team visited, but he did not turn his praise of Big Macs and french fries into a political discussion.

TMZ caught up with Lawrence outside the White House on Monday night, and the freshman said with a big smile that the buffet Trump treated the national champions to was “awesome.” What he did not say, however, is that it was the “best meal we ever had” and make a remark about football players not wanting to eat organic vegan food. A meme that circulated on Tuesday included some fabricated remarks from Lawrence, and he quickly set the record straight.

It’s unclear where the meme originated, but it was shared by conservative social media personality Cloyd Rivers, who has nearly 2 million Twitter followers. He apologized after Lawrence sent his tweet and said he did not fact check before posting the quote on his own page.

Trump said he went with a spread of fast food for Clemson’s visit because of the government shutdown and because he felt college football players would enjoy it. It’s fair to wonder if the president was right about that based on at least one of the reactions we saw, but Lawrence thought it was “awesome.” There’s no need to take it any further than that.
