Washington added quarterback depth to its 2025 roster with the addition of Kai Horton from Tulane on Tuesday evening. The senior quarterback will have one year of eligibility remaining as a Husky. Demond Williams Jr. will be an experienced true sophomore in 2025, but behind him there’s little to n0 playing experience. Dash Beierly and Kini McMillan enrolled this Winter as true freshmen. Junior Shea Kuykendall transferred to Washington in the Spring of last season but did not see any action in 2024. Horton becomes the oldest quarterback in the room with four years of college experience at Tulane.
Horton was originally a three-star recruit in the class of 2021 from Carthage, Texas. He enrolled at Tulane where his experience was mostly as a backup. But in 2023, Horton started three games for the Green Wave. He started against Ole Miss and Southern Mississippi in the regular season that year, and against Virginia Tech in the bowl game. Horton attempted 82 passes that season with three touchdowns, two interceptions, and just over 600 passing yards. The 6’-4” and 220-pound quarterback also got involved in the run game. Of his 20 rushes in 2023, nine were designed runs and he had two scores on the ground. In total, Horton has 866 passing yards, six touchdowns, and five interceptions in 13 games played over four seasons.
The addition for Washington was one to shore up the quarterback room with someone who’s seen the field a considerable amount. Horton has taken 356 career snaps in the FBS over his four seasons in New Orleans. Outside of Williams, no other quarterback at Washington has taken a single FBS snap. Kuykendall started three games at Northern Colorado, throwing for 454 yards with two touchdowns and two interceptions. But the former Bear has just 192 collegiate snaps under his belt.
This is Horton’s second time in the transfer portal in as many seasons. After his uptick in playing time in 2023, the Texas native entered the transfer portal on December 9th of that season. He withdrew his name in January and returned to Tulane. Exactly one year later, Horton entered the portal again on December 9th, 2024. This time, he heads to the Big Ten to provide an experienced presence in a quarterback room with a young, high-upside starter.
Because Washington is on the quarter system for academics, Horton will be enrolled in the Spring quarter as a grad student, and eligible for Spring camp.
