The Mustangs' historic first season in the ACC after coming over from the American Athletic ended with a step forward in the College Football Playoff. While the loss to Penn State was a stinger, SMU looks to build off the success in 2024.
One of the biggest contributors for the Mustangs will be quarterback Kevin Jennings. After stepping in as the starting role early in the 2024 season, Jennings threw for 3,245 yards and accounted for 28 total touchdowns, earning a passer rating of 70.3. He was ranked as the 29th-best player in the country on CBS Sports' college football top 150 list this week. His consistency and leadership helped keep the Mustangs in playoff contention.
"Dual-threat who throws well on the move," CBS Sports' Blake Brockermeyer wrote. "Smart fit in (Rhett) Lashlee's system. Needs to improve decision-making under pressure, but the upside is clear."
Jennings is joined by SMU safety Isaiah Kwokobia on the list. The Mustangs DB came in at No. 122, ahead of seven other defenders across the nation. "Glue piece in the secondary with 100 tackles, 3 INTs and great range," Brockermeyer said. "Versatile safety who can blitz, cover, and hit. Can be too aggressive in the red zone. Wears No. 23 as a tribute to Southwest Conference trailblazer Jerry LeVias and tone-setter on and off the field."
SMU will try to back up their ACC debut next fall, when their conference slate includes games against Miami, Clemson and Louisville. They open the season against East Texas A&M at Ford Stadium on August 30.
