It was a rebuilding season under Scott Frost at UCF, and it was a struggle to get through the Big 12 slate.
Does this year’s schedule have enough breaks to get to at least six wins and a bowl game? There should be enough victories on this slate to improve by at least a win or two.
The Knights don’t have to play Texas Tech or Utah. There’s a solid chance that those two are the best in the Big 12, and there’s no worrying about dealing with them. Getting Arizona State and BYU in Orlando is massive, too.
The Big 12 road games are favorable, but for a team looking to at least get bowling, that means there aren’t any sure-thing conference wins at home. Just about every game should be a 50/50 fight.
Arizona, Cincinnati, Kansas State, Texas Tech, Utah, West Virginia. Again, missing Texas Tech and Utah might be the biggest break in the Big 12. Not having to deal with Arizona or Cincinnati isn’t a bad deal, either.
The five away dates are winnable, but there will be a miss somewhere. UCF goes 4-1, 3-2 at worst, and there’s no drama getting bowl eligible no matter what happens with the home games against BYU and Arizona State. But …
No, the road games aren’t that bad, but again, that means the home dates won’t be easy - at least after Bethune-Cookman and Georgia State. They drop at least three of the Big 12 home games, getting bowl eligible comes down to the trip to Colorado.
Sept 3 Bethune-Cookman
Sept 12 at Pitt
Sept 19 Georgia State
Sept 26 TCU
Oct 3 at Houston
Oct 10 at Oklahoma State
Oct 17 OPEN DATE
Oct 24 BYU
Oct 31 Baylor
Nov 7 at Kansas
Nov 14 Arizona State
Nov 21 Iowa State
Nov 28 at Colorado
1. Sept. 26, TCU. The Horned Frogs will be dangerous, but if UCF wants to make any sort of a Big 12 splash, it has to win the conference home opener.
2. Nov. 7, at Kansas. With Arizona State up next, pulling off a road win in early November will be a key turning point in the season, one way or another.
3. Sept. 12, at Pitt. The Panthers will be needing this game even more than UCF will, but win, and it’ll be a 3-0 start going into the Big 12 season.
