The University of Alabama at Birmingham suffered a heartbreaking loss this week following the tragic death of football signee Jamari Smith.
Smith, 18, a basketball and football star at Alabama’s Lee High School, signed with UAB in February and was expected to attend practices with the team this summer.
On Wednesday afternoon at Lee County Lake, Smith drowned, according to reports.

According to AL.com, Smith was swimming with friends in the lake when he slipped underwater. His friends quickly tried to rescue Smith as others quickly called 911. Medics were said to respond quickly, but life-saving measures were not successful.
