Update emerges on Virginia Tech’s dream head coach candidate

The Virginia Tech Hokies and their fans have a dream candidate for their head coaching vacancy, but it does not sound likely that they will get their wish.

South Carolina coach Shane Beamer has been speculated as a possible candidate at Virginia Tech after the team fired Brent Pry on Sunday after three-plus seasons. Beamer’s father Frank coached the Hokies from 1987 to 2015.

“I just don’t see any scenario right now where (Beamer) ends up being a legitimate possibility to be the next head coach at Virginia Tech,” CBS Sports’ Matt Zenitz said on the “CFB Insiders” podcast.

Zenitz also suggested that Norfolk State coach Michael Vick, also a Virginia Tech alum, probably will not get a look either. Vick has distanced himself from rumors linking him to the job.

Unlike Vick, Beamer actually has the resume to get a look from the Hokies. He is 31-23 in his fifth season at South Carolina, though he has not made the Gamecocks a consistent contender. He also quite memorably flipped out on a rival coach during last year’s bowl game.

Virginia Tech would qualify as a step down for Beamer. Even though he might have a lot of sentimental attachment to the Hokies, he probably won’t be voluntarily leaving South Carolina to take the job.
