The Michigan Wolverines' Saturday clash against John Mateer and the Oklahoma Sooners was billed as the Game of the Week by Fox Sports, ESPN and other networks heading into Saturday's 7:30 p.m. kickoff in Norman, Oklahoma, a game that will include the second start of Wolverines freshman Bryce Underwood's college career.
The Wolverines' matchup comes on the heels of Underwood's 250 plus yard passing game against the New Mexico Lobos last week and is one of the most highly anticipated games of the season.
Underwood will be tested against an athletic defense with one of the most athletic and disruptive defensive lines in the country, but former Ohio State and Jacksonville Jaguars coach Urban Meyer seems to think he has the tools to succeed in a hostile environment.
Meyer and Barstool Sports host Dave Portnoy discussed Underwood on Fox's Big Noon Kickoff show Saturday with the former Buckeyes coach pumping the brakes on Portnoy's proclamations in a crafty way.
"I've sat with Urban, I've sat with all the quarterbacks, they're drooling about this guy, Bryce Underwood," Portnoy said. "They can't believe what they're seeing on tape.
"He's like the supernova," he added, saying that he might be the "single best freshman ever in college football."
Meyer responded, seemingly tongue tied as to what he could say about Underwood while not sounding as if he was hyping up a Michigan player.
"Ever is a big word, but what I saw is what I saw," Meyer said. "I made a comment, and I had a couple of them, like a Percy Harvin (Tim Tebow) or a Zeke Elliott, when you see that cat and you're like, 'My gosh.'
"I saw that last week against New Mexico," he added.
The Wolverines need a strong game from Underwood against the Sooners, especially in terms of ball security on the road against a high powered offense.
Defensive coordinator Wink Martindale has a bevy of defensive backs to throw at Mateer and the rest of the Sooners' offense but Underwood must avoid fumbles or interceptions that could turn the tide of the game in the Sooners' favor.
Meyer's comments on Underwood came as Fox Sports host Joel Klatt shared his unfiltered thoughts on referees' "spineless" targeting penalty against Wolverines linebacker Jaishawn Barham, who will miss the first half of tonight's game.
A five-star Wolverines defensive end prospect, Carter Meadows, squashed rumors that he might want to attend Ohio State in a strongly worded statement.
Michigan football has its signal caller of the present and future in Underwood. Now the stage is set for perhaps his biggest performance yet against a team that could make a run at an SEC championship and the College Football Playoff.
