The SEC Championship race is so close heading into Week 13 of the college football season.
Texas and Texas A&M lead the pack with 5-1 conference records but are closely followed by Georgia, with a 6-2 conference record, and Tennessee with a 5-2 conference record. Alabama and Ole Miss are right behind them with 4-2 conference records.
It's going to come down to the wire in terms of who plays in the SEC Championship Game but Ole Miss head coach Lane Kiffin recently revealed that some SEC coaches don't want to play in the SEC Championship Game due to a fear of missing out on the College Football Playoff.
“I’ve talked to other coaches, so I’ll just kind of give you the feeling from some other coaches that. They don’t want to be in it,” Kiffin said, (first transcribed by On3). You know, the reward to get a bye versus the risk to get knocked out completely. I mean, that’s a that’s a pretty big, that’s a really big risk.”
Former Florida and Ohio State head coach Urban Meyer saw that quote and was bewildered by it.
“I’m shutting you out because I can’t even think like that,” Meyer said, (first transcribed by On3).
The funny thing is that Kiffin's program, Ole Miss, still has a chance to make the CFP if it can make the SEC Title game and win it. Heck, even if Ole Miss doesn't get in the title game but wins out, the CFP Committee could decide to put the program in the 12-team field when the final rankings come out.
Ole Miss will finish the season with matchups against Florida and rival Mississippi State.
