USC Trojans Practice No. 12 Observations And Takeaways

Trojan family — Practice 12 is in the books.

We were to observe the entire USC Trojans practice, but cannot report on specifics. Talked to Lincoln Riley + defensive players afterward (first availability since the Wednesday scrimmage). Intensity was high. Overall vibe is strong.

USC Trojans Biggest New Thing: Crowd-Noise System

They finally turned on the new state-of-the-art surround-sound system on the practice fields.

Old way: a couple of big portable speakers wheeled out.
New way: high-quality surround speakers all around the field pumping real stadium noise.

It sounds like you’re standing in Death Valley or Happy Valley. Legit loud.

This is a game-changer in preparation and can help set the program apart.

• Sharpens communication under noise
• Hand signals, loud talking, headset-to-player, pre-snap calls
• Helps cut down false starts, offsides, and miscommunications
• Prepares them for real road environments in a way they never really could before

This is a genuine operational upgrade that doesn’t get talked about much yet. First time we saw it fully in action today. Big deal.

USC Trojans Running Game + Defensive Front Seven

It’s not as clean as they’d like yet — but not fully because of offensive execution problems.

A big reason is that the defensive front seven is really good right now.

That’s the exciting part.

We already know a Lincoln Riley offense is going to be good (even if it takes a little time to get fully humming). Seeing the defense give the offense real problems in practice is a positive signal for the defensive side of the ball.

Depth and rotation on that front seven look capable of creating real issues. And the unit is DEEP.

Kilian O’Connor Situation

The injury is devastating (non-contact, season-ending).

You can feel how much he means to the USC Trojans program:

• Walk-on → scholarship → starter
• Respected leader
• Players love him

Riley made clear he’ll still be heavily involved:

• Leadership role
• Helping with installs
• Mentoring the next guys at center (Tobias Raymond, Willie Wascher, etc.)

They’re already working on carving out a future staff role for him (GA-type path or similar) if he wants to step into coaching. He’s basically been a coach on the field already. Riley’s own path (player → GA) is the obvious parallel.

Real USC Trojans Kicking Battle

Ryon Sayeri and Caden Chittenden are in a legit kicking battle. Riley told us that Sayeri will handle the kickoff duties, but the field goal and extra point operation are still up for grabs as the two kickers battle through the rest of fall camp.
