It was just one game.
Illinois got whacked by Indiana 63-10 with everyone watching, but again, it only counts as one loss. This is still a good Illini team, the schedule still works out well, and …
The program, and head coach Bret Bielema, could really use a face-saving rebound win. Get this, and all of a sudden, everything is back on with a not-horrible slate ahead - at least outside of the home game against Ohio State.
On the flip side, USC has been terrific.
Few have seen just how good it can be - the win over Michigan State ended at about 3 am ET on Sunday - but at 4-0, and with dominant playmakers on both sides of the ball, now we’re all about to find out if Lincoln Riley’s team is a player.
There’s this, then Michigan, then at Notre Dame, then at Nebraska. Illinois gets Purdue next.

Jayden Maiava, it’s time to eat.
Indiana’s Fernando Mendoza ripped the Illini to shreds, hitting 21-of-23 passes on midrange throws that turned into big, gashing plays. The Hoosier passing game is strong, but USC has even more stars at receiver to turn loose.
USC and Maiava have been brilliant. No interceptions, lots of deep shots, and a rhythm that looks the part of a Lincoln Riley offense again - the improved O line has a big part in that.
But it’s the pass rush that should be the killer.
USC leads the nation in sacks and is fourth in tackles for loss. Who leads all of college football in tackles behind the line? Indiana, who came up with ten last week against the Illini.
USC was a little off in its only road game of the year.
It traveled to Purdue two weeks ago, it wasn't amazing - but got the job done in a 33-17 win - and now it has to get back on a plane and go back to the Midwest.
It’s USC, and over the last few years under Riley, that means there will be a bit of a coffee break at some point.
Last week, the Trojans were up on Michigan State 31-10, it was over, and then came the USC lull. The Spartans owned the third quarter, and all of a sudden, things got interesting. And …
There’s the crisis of confidence aspect to this - Illinois really is much better than it played in Bloomington. But now it has to prove it.
The Hoosier game got away from Illini early on, the game plan went into the tank, and now all needs to be right with the world with one of those Bret Bielema-coached bully performances when the lines take over.
Illinois will be far better this week, but it won’t be quite enough. The USC defensive front will be too good behind the line as the game goes on.
