This shouldn’t be too bad considering the way the bowl season has gone so far.
Both teams lost a few big parts, but they’re mostly coming into this at close to full strength. Really, who doesn’t want to go to Hawaii?
San Jose State had a surprisingly strong season with a terrific passing attack in the first year under Ken Niumatalolo, and now it has a chance to close out with something special. Win, and it’ll be the program’s first bowl victory since 2015 - it lost its last three.
USF didn’t have the season expected after a strong 2023, but it battled through all the adversity and a 2-4 start to get six wins against a slew of really, really bad teams. But get by the Spartans, and the Bulls will have their fourth bowl win in the last five and seventh in the last nine.

Finally, USF is playing a team that cares about the time of possession battle as much as it does - which is not at all
The Bulls are dead last in the nation in time of possession, and San Jose State isn’t far behind.
The equation is simple. San Jose State is a passing team that finished 131st in the nation in rushing.
Star WR Nick Nash is getting ready for life in the NFL, the USF pass rush should be able to pin its ears back and apply pressure, and then hope the takeaways come.
Both teams need to force turnovers to win. USF turned it over 17 times on the season. San Jose State gave it up 27 times with three or more turnovers six times, but …
Again, time of possession. San Jose State doesn’t worry about it, but USF is even worse.
Turnovers. Yes, the Spartan O gives it away more, but the takeaways from the USF defense came in bulk. San Jose State was far more consistent at generating the mistakes.
Along with Nash, San Jose State is missing the starting corner tandem of Michael Dansby and DJ Harvey. That’s not a plus, but USF wins when it runs well. When it throws, that’s because it needs to.
This should be relatively close to the pin when it comes to how representative the two teams are compared to the regular season.
San Jose State QB Walker Eget is around, and most of the linemen are in place, but losing Nash is massive. Bryce Archie has been okay under center for the Bulls, but there’s a chance Byrum Brown might finally be back after missing most of the season.
Neither team beat a team that’s in a bowl game, but USF was much worse in the losses. It’s 1-4 when allowing more than 210 passing yards, San Jose State threw for 225 or more in in eight games, and then there’s Niumatalolo.
His Navy teams went to one bowl inches final four years at the helm, but he won vice of his last six bowl appearances.
The Spartans squeak by in a good one.
