Utah Utes Land Dynamic New Mexico QB Transfer Devon Dampier

For the past couple of seasons, the Utah Utes have had major issues at quarterback.

After back-to-back Pac-12 titles, Cam Rising's injury issues unfortunately made him unreliable, which led to the Utes having to rely on young and inexperienced quarterbacks.

Following a dreadful 2024 season, Kyle Whittingham brought in a new offensive coordinator in New Mexico's Jason Beck, whose unit ranked No. 4 in the country in total offense. On top of that, the quarterback room from this past season is completely empty as Rising isn't expected to return, while Brandon Rose, Isaac Wilson and Sam Haurd all hit the portal.

As Utah fans were hoping for, the Utes were able to bring in a portal quarterback of their own as Beck's former quarterback at New Mexico, Devon Dampier, announced on Wednesday he'd be transferring to Utah.

Dampier is easily one of the most dynamic quarterbacks in college football, as he's coming off of a year that saw him throw for over 2,700 yards and 12 touchdowns while also rushing for 1,166 yards and 19 touchdowns. His strong showing led to him being named First-team All-Mountain West.

Dampier's biggest downfall was the fact that he threw 12 interceptions, but another year in Beck's system and even better weapons around him should rectify that issue.

With Dampier as the headliner, the Utes are expected to continue to make a major push in the transfer portal to help turn this program back into a contender.

According to 247Sports, he ranks as the No. 77 player in the portal and the No. 10 quarterback.
