The Vanderbilt machine isn’t stopping.
It had a blip at home against Alabama, but that’s been it so far. It roasted LSU - putting the Fire Brian Kelly thing into hyperdrive - and held on for dear life in a 17-10 thriller over Missouri.
With winnable home games against Auburn and Kentucky up next, win this, and the Commodores should get to 10-1, and realistically, have at least an at-large spot in the College Football Playoff all but wrapped up before going into the regular season finale at Tennessee.
Texas is still hanging on by a thread. It’s 6-2, but it has a date at Georgia up next in two weeks, and then after dealing with Arkansas, it has to deal with Texas A&M. The SEC title is still in play, but that’s gone, along with the College Football Playoff, with a loss.

The Missouri game was a key moment for the Commodores. It was the first time this year that it was able to win when things weren’t working.
No, Vanderbilt doesn’t have the talent of most SEC teams, but it’s brilliant at converting on third downs and owning the clock and the narrative - that’s how it gets by. But against Mizzou, the offense couldn’t get moving, the third down conversions weren’t there, and it was a struggle.
But the Commodores still won, even with a season-low 265 yards of total offense.
Texas continues to struggle. The running game doesn’t work, the line is shockingly awful, it has a way of making things harder than it needs to, and …
Texas is able to win even though way too many things aren’t working.
The defense continues to be fantastic. It got ripped apart by Mississippi State’s passing game, but it locked up against the run in the overtime win. It made up for the offense’s problems in the overtime win over Kentucky, and it shut down Oklahoma to a dead stop.
It has the speed and talent at linebacker to keep Diego Pavia from taking off and keep things moving on third downs. But that’s not the problem.
Can the offense get the passing game moving? Texas isn’t going to run a lick on the Commodore defense, so it’s all about …
Is Arch Manning okay? He had one of the best games of his short career, throwing for 346 yards and three touchdowns against Mississippi State, with a rushing score, but he suffered a concussion late in the game.
Matthew Caldwell completed the one pass he threw for the game-winning touchdown in overtime, and it’s still a question mark about who the starting quarterback will be.
It doesn’t matter. The Texas defense will be the star to keep this close, and the offense will once again do just enough to survive.
