Vols insider gives the latest on Tennessee special teams coordinator Mike Ekeler and the possibility of him leaving for Nebraska

Tennessee Vols special teams coordinator/outside linebackers coach Mike Ekeler isn't currently under contract with the program beyond the end of January.

Ekeler's name has been connected to the special teams coordinator job at Nebraska in recent weeks. Ekeler, who played college football at Kansas State, is originally from Nebraska and he served as the Cornhuskers' linebackers coach from 2008 to 2010.

Additionally, Ekeler's parents reportedly still live in Nebraska.

VolQuest's Brent Hubbs joined 104.5 The Zone's Ramon, Kayla, and Will on Friday to discuss Tennessee athletics and he was asked about Ekeler's status with the Vols.

Hubbs noted that while the Nebraska special teams coordinator job is still open, he doesn't think that Cornhuskers head coach Matt Rhule is targeting Ekeler.

"Nebraska was a unique situation because that's where Mike Ekeler is from," said Hubbs. "So again, his name came up there. I don't know how deep the conversation has ever gotten, and that position's not been filled at Nebraska. It certainly doesn't feel like Matt Rhule is going to go the direction of Mike Ekeler.

"Tennessee, by and large, under (athletic director) Danny White has been slow to finalize deals. Most guys around the country and assistant coaches in football aren't working on expiring contracts. Most of them get an extension, an automatic rollover, and they have a two-year deal as they enter into the season. But that's not been the way that Danny White has done it with some of his assistants at Tennessee. And that's why you've got four coaches, when you count the strength coach, who have been on expiring deals. I think they're all going to get a new deal."

ESPN reported earlier this week that Vols defensive coordinator Tim Banks, whose contract was set to expire at the end of January, is finalizing a new deal to return to Tennessee in 2025.

Vols secondary coach Willie Martinez and strength coach Kurt Schmidt are the other two coaches that are working on expiring contracts. It sounds like Hubbs thinks Ekeler, Martinez, and Schmidt could land new deals with Tennessee in the coming weeks.

If each of those coaches sign new deals with UT, the Vols will likely return their entire coaching staff (outside of some changes at a couple of analyst positions) in 2025.
