The UNLV Rebels have added a familiar football name to their coaching support staff. Former NFL linebacker Vontaze Burfict has joined first year head coach Dan Mullen’s program as a defensive analyst. Reuniting with interim defensive coordinator Paul Guenther, who coached him during his time with the Cincinnati Bengals and Oakland Raiders.

From Star Recruit to Controversial NFL Figure

Burfict’s football journey began at Arizona State University, where he was one of the most highly touted linebacker recruits in the nation. His college career was marked by standout play and recognition, including First-Team All-American honors in 2010, but also by frequent penalties and questions about discipline.

After going undrafted in 2012, Burfict signed with the Bengals. Quickly earning a starting spot and making the Pro Bowl in 2013. Over eight seasons in the NFL, he posted 608 tackles, eight interceptions, and nine forced fumbles. However, his hard hitting style also led to 14 separate fines and suspensions, totaling $5.3 million. Including a record 12 game suspension in 2019 for a helmet to helmet hit.

While the title “defensive analyst” may sound like an on field coaching job, NCAA rules limit such positions to behind-the-scenes work. Burfict’s responsibilities will include breaking down game film, scouting opposing offenses, assisting in game plan design, and analyzing UNLV’s own defensive performance for weaknesses. Analysts are not permitted to directly coach players during practices or games.

Why UNLV Brought Him In

The hiring is rooted in Burfict’s established relationship with Paul Guenther. With his deep understanding of defensive football at the highest level. His NFL experience offers valuable perspective for UNLV’s preparation, and his knowledge of complex schemes could help modernize the Rebels’ defense.

Without a doubt he can be a really good mentor to players like Justin Flowe. Who is a player that was compared to Burfict with both players being the best players in their region in California. But their college careers are night and day at this point.
