With North Carolina driving, Gio Lopez connected with Nathan Leacock, and it looked like Leacock was going to score the go-ahead touchdown, but Cal's Brent "Paco" Austin punched out the ball at the two-yard line, and the loose football went into the end zone, where Austin recovered it. Instead of a Carolina touchdown, it became Cal's football at the 20 with 3:48 left in the game.
