As a first-year head coach at Florida, Jon Sumrall will be facing a great deal of pressure to win. Fans want and expect the Gators to compete with the elite of the SEC. To do so, plenty needs to change in Gainesville. Coach Sumrall sees the obvious advantages of being at Florida, but his recent comments may come back to haunt him.
On paper, Florida is a much easier place to recruit than Coach Sumrall’s last two stops: Troy and Tulane. And this is true for countless reasons. Sumrall can sell the SEC, better facilities, the Gators’ brand and former great players. On top of that, the program has NIL money available that Troy and Tulane can only dream of.
However, “this is not a really hard place to recruit to” needs to be dissected a bit.
If a head coach is going to openly boast about how easy it is to recruit at a school, they better be reeling in top players at an elite level. So, how has Coach Sumrall done during his limited time on campus?
Florida currently has six commitments. They have been on a roll recently, most notably adding five-star offensive lineman Maxwell Hiller (Coatesville, PA), four-star quarterback Davin Davidson (Sarasota, FL) and flipping four-star cornerback Aamaury Fountain (Warner Robbins, GA) from South Carolina.
On top of that, the Gators are serious contenders for several elite recruits, such as five-star defensive lineman Jalen Brewster (Cedar Hill, TX), who is committed to Texas Tech and five-star wide receiver Easton Royal (New Orleans, LA), who is committed to Texas.
Things are trending in the right direction for Coach Sumrall and the Gators, but when you are recruiting against the elite, there will be losses. And because of this, his choice of words during the press conference were ill-advised.
These words will also return, because the next time and every time that Florida loses a top recruit to an SEC or in-state rival, you can be assured that the video of his comments will resurface. Coaching in the SEC isn’t easy and mistakes will be made, but Coach Sumrall needs to realize that he doesn’t need to add self-inflicted wounds along the way.
