Watch: SEC commentator says that 'nobody wanted' Kentucky RB Ray Davis, former foster child

During Saturday's Kentucky vs. Eastern Kentucky broadcast, SEC Network announcer Pete Sousa made a bit of a faux pas, upsetting viewers by saying that "nobody wanted" Kentucky running back Ray Davis, a former foster child.

"He's a guy, transferring over from Vanderbilt," Sousa said innocently. "Nine months ago when he jumped in the portal, everybody wanted him. 11 years ago, as a foster kid, really nobody wanted him."

Sousa's poor choice of words fired up fans watching at home, many of whom took to social media to share their displeasure. However, as Sousa ultimately mentioned, his words were basically a quote from Davis himself.

In August, Davis sat down with Darrell Bird of 247Sports, opening up about bouncing around foster care at eight to being homeless at 12 while wishing every day that someone would take him even "temporarily." However, one quote from Davis, in particular, stands out and sounds similar to what Sousa said during the broadcast.

"But as the days go on, you start to realize that nobody wants you," Davis said.

Sousa's comments are likely being taken out of context. However, he'd surely have picked a different anecdote if given another chance.

As for Davis, he's thriving as a Wildcat.

Davis kicked off the year with a bang, rushing for 112 yards and two touchdowns off 14 carries in Kentucky's season-opening 44-14 victory over Ball State last week. Meanwhile, on Saturday, Davis contributed 52 rushing yards off 12 carries with three receptions for 36 yards and a touchdown in Kentucky's 28-17 win over Eastern Kentucky, helping the Wildcats improve to 2-0.

When it comes to his rough past, Davis hasn't forgotten, and he's hoping that sharing his experience will help others.

"I want to be an advocate for kids in the system, foster kids, because I once was like them," Davis said. "I experienced all the hardship that you go through being in that system, waiting for someone to adopt you or for someone not to want you because of how old you are or the background that you come from."
