Weekly Report Card: Week 2

The Texas Longhorns are now 1-1 on the season after a 38-7 victory over San Jose State. Quarterback Arch Manning has won our Most Improved Player of the Week award, but it’s time for the whole team to get its grade.

The offense and the defense both receive a numerical grade, which will be rounded out for an overall letter grade.

Offense: 82

The offense throughout the game lacked a sense of… crispness. Lack of smoothness could also describe it, but the point is that while watching the game, the offense just seemed as though it couldn’t exactly flow.

While some teams struggled over the weekend, some were scoring 70+. Obviously, comparisons aren’t entirely fair, so we’re not here to do that. But what we are here to do is judge, and overall, Texas lacked offensive production from an offense that entered the season with a preseason Heisman favorite, as well as strong favoritism from all over, shown in the preseason No. 1 ranking.

The offense just seems a bit out of touch, as if there’s no chemistry established quite yet, which is fair, as that can take time to develop, or it could happen quickly through practice. In the Longhorns’ case, it’s going to take a second.

Head coach Steve Sarkisian will just have to ensure that the team is developing and improving at a relatively fast pace, so that the team will be ready for conference play in three weeks. For these reasons, the offense earns a grade of 82.

Defense: 91

The defense has been the star of the show since the Ohio State game. Although it’s not unreasonable to say that a shutout against the Spartans could have been expected, the defense played good, just not great, considering the quality of the team it played.

There was an interception, and the defense was able to create a very nice pass rush. Penalties may have held the team back at times, but for the most part, it played very well. It gave up some plays at times, but that will happen.

Just because the defense didn’t force a three-and-out every drive doesn’t mean that it’s not good. The defense put the world on notice with its performance against Ohio State, so it will be fine.

As long as the defensive performance doesn’t steadily decline, then Texas will be in good hands. The defense earns a grade of 91 for this performance, mainly due to the lack of big plays that were created.

Overall grade: B
