What does FBS stand for in college football?

In college football, FBS stands for Football Bowl Subdivision, formerly known as Division I-A. The FBS consists of NCAA schools that compete at the highest level of competition in the sport. Among those schools are powerhouses Alabama, Clemson, Notre Dame and Oklahoma.

What is the FCS?

FCS stands for Football Championship Subdivision, which consists of NCAA programs smaller than FBS schools. FCS schools frequently play, and sometimes beat, FBS schools. The most famous example came in 2007, when Appalachian State shocked Michigan, 34-32, in Ann Arbor. Appalachian State moved to the FBS in 2014.
