BYU’s Quarterback Crisis: Who’s Ready to Lead if Retzlaff Is Gone?
If Jake Retzlaff has taken his final snap for BYU, the Cougars may be facing their most critical offseason decision in years. The former starter is entangled in a legal and Honor Code firestorm following a 2023 incident that could permanently sideline his BYU career—regardless of the courtroom outcome.
While Retzlaff has not been criminally charged, the possibility of a violation of BYU’s strict Honor Code looms large. That means head coach Kalani Sitake and offensive coordinator Aaron Roderick must prepare to move forward without their QB1.
So, who’s next in line?
McCae Hillstead might be the safest bet. A transfer from Utah State, the Lehi native has already flashed promise. In his freshman year, he posted 399 yards and four touchdowns in a shootout against James Madison. His familiarity with the region and upside as a dual-threat make him a strong contender for the job.
Treyson Bourguet offers experience. The junior transfer from Western Michigan played in 10 games and threw for 1,314 yards with six touchdowns over two seasons. If BYU opts for steadiness and veteran poise—especially early in Big 12 play—Bourguet could be the bridge until a younger star is ready.
But the most intriguing option? Bear Bachmeier. The true freshman comes with blue-chip pedigree: a former four-star recruit with offers from Georgia, Notre Dame, and Alabama. Originally signed with Stanford, he flipped to BYU after a coaching change. At 6’2” and 210 pounds, Bear’s combination of arm talent, football IQ, and athleticism could make him the face of BYU’s future—sooner than expected.
Each of these quarterbacks brings something different to the table, but Sitake will need to make a decision that sets the tone for a new chapter.
If BYU wants to avoid falling further behind in the Big 12 arms race, they must choose not just a quarterback—but a leader. The Cougars can’t afford to misfire here.
