What senior quarterback Maddux Madsen said following Boise State’s latest spring practice session

Spending five seasons at the same school has become a rarity in modern college football. 

In a throwback to a different era, quarterback Maddux Madsen and Boise State have stuck with each other over the last half-decade. Madsen, the Broncos’ full-time starter the past two seasons, is hoping to end his five-year Boise State career with a fourth consecutive conference title. 

“It definitely has hit me,” Madsen said following Tuesday’s practice. “I think it’s a huge deal to be here for five years. … Playing the same place in college football for five years, you don’t see that very often. I’ve taken a lot of pride in that, and everything I want to give to this program. I’ll hopefully go out with a bang.”

The Broncos, who are leaving the Mountain West for the Pac-12 this summer, wrapped up their MWC run with three straight titles. 

Here are the highlights from Madsen’s post-practice comments.

On maintaining health

“I always joke that I’m getting old, but really I’m one of the oldest in here, and this game wears and tears on the body. So I have to be super intentional with how I’m taking care of my body. … It’s definitely something I’ve tried to take a stride in, for sure.”

On building chemistry with new receivers

“That’s the best part about spring ball. Even some of the younger guys from last year … to me, that’s the best part of spring ball, to get on the same wavelength. It really just comes with reps. I had that conversation with (Quinton Brown) today. It’s like ‘Hey, we’ll have several reps together. Let’s not stress about it on Day 3 of spring ball.’”

On freshmen quarterbacks Cash Herrera, Jackson Taylor

“They’re extremely impressive to me. That’s something that I’ve noticed since the day they got in here, their ability. Both Jackson and Cash, they were meeting with (quarterbacks coach Zak) Hill prior to our own quarterback meetings, just basically to get a good understanding of the offense, and they’ve done a really impressive job. (Offensive coordinator Nate) Potter mentioned on the first day of practice that Cash got more reps than any freshman quarterback in Boise State history. He was just thrown into the fire, and I think it will help him down the road.

“They’ve done a really good job of understanding. They’ll get the speed of the game a little bit as we get more into it, but they’ve done a really good job. They impress me.”
