Why Patriots Great Bill Belichick Won’t Be On Hard Knocks This Offseason

It was reported in recent weeks that Patriots great Bill Belichick and the North Carolina Tar Heels would be the first college program featured in a season of "Hard Knocks." Belichick has never appeared on "Hard Knocks," and unfortunately, that will remain the case.

The Athletic's Andrew Marchand and Lauren Merola reported on Tuesday that Belichick’s North Carolina football team will not be on "Hard Knocks."

According to their report, NFL Films, which produces "Hard Knocks," had discussions with Belichick and the Tar Heels about appearing on the show this offseason but could not reach an agreement, NFL vice president of communications Alex Riethmiller said.

It would have been fascinating to see Belichick in the spotlight, especially in his first season coaching college football. He signed a five-year deal with UNC, including three guaranteed years, a $10 million annual base salary, and additional incentives.

If Belichick decides to leave before June, he must pay the university $10 million. After June, the buyout drops to $1 million. He has also added both of his sons to the coaching staff, along with Freddie Kitchens and Matt Lombardi.

Belichick will replace Mack Brown, the winningest coach in UNC history. Brown led the Tar Heels to a 6-6 regular season record and a 27-14 loss to UConn in the Fenway Bowl, leaving the team with a 6-7 record.

Brown was fired at the end of the season, paving the way for the hiring of Belichick, one of the most successful coaches in NFL history. The Tar Heels had successful seasons in recent years with Sam Howell and Drake Maye at quarterback but struggled this past season after Maye's departure.

Hopefully, Belichick can rebuild the program's culture and restore UNC to its winning ways.
