RUN … THE … (BLEEP)ING … BALL
Wisconsin not being able to run the ball is like Arby’s running out of roast beef. It can’t happen.
Since Luke Fickell took over, the program has tried to pivot to more of a diverse attack, but a funny thing happened along the way. When the Badgers ran, they won.
Over the last two seasons and the 2022 Guaranteed Rate Bowl win over Oklahoma State, Wisconsin was 12-0 when it ran for over 150 yards, and 1-13 when it didn’t. It was 13-1 when running 35 times or more. But …
Billy Edwards Jr., QB Sr.
Yeah, Wisconsin needs to run the ball, and keep running it, but part of the puzzle is being able to move the chains and control the clock. Wisconsin’s passing attack is under 60% since Fickell took over, and that’s partly why the team was so miserable on third downs.
Edwards is a good veteran who hit 65% of his throws last season. Maryland was awful, but he wasn’t bad. He HAS to settle the Badger quarterback situation.

Wisconsin Offense Breakdown
Wisconsin Defense Breakdown
Top Transfer In: Corey Walker, EDGE, Sr.
The Badgers brought in a slew of more talented transfers, including for the defensive front. But the defense desperately needs proven playmakers behind the line, and that’s Walker. He made 69 stops with eight sacks and 15 tackles for loss over the last two years at Western Michigan.
Top Transfer Out: Xavier Lucas, CB Soph.
Let’s just say this whole thing has been a tad messy. Okay, really messy.
(It has to do with how Lucas left Wisconsin for Miami, he wasn’t really in the transfer portal, and there’s an NIL deal involved … it’s all legal stuff.)
But beyond all of that, he’s a big-time cornerback talent with NFL upside. He showed flashes as a freshman, and now he should be great for the Hurricanes.
Iowa, Oct. 11
The Badgers have a brutal slate, and they can’t afford to give away winnable home games. How’s this for an October? They go to Michigan, deal with Iowa, and then get Ohio State and at Oregon.
Wisconsin has lost the last three meetings with the Hawkeyes, including an ugly 42-10 steamrolling last year.

The Badgers will be better.
The starting 22 is strong, the depth is there, and the schemes should start to produce. But there’s a massive problem …
The schedule is beyond brutal.
Let’s start with the positives. The Badgers don’t have to play Penn State, and it’s never a bad thing to miss USC. That’s it.
Purdue should be a free-space game, and Michigan State, Nebraska, Northwestern, Rutgers, and UCLA are all in Wisconsin’s wheelhouse - none of them are on the Badger schedule.
Wisconsin has to travel to Oregon a week after facing Ohio State. It has to deal with Iowa a week after going to Michigan. Going to Indiana is no longer a walk in the park, Illinois is nasty this year, and it all ends up with a trip to Minnesota.
Oh yeah, and playing in Tuscaloosa, Alabama, on September 13th should be lovely. That means the Badgers will almost certainly have a base of four losses - at Alabama, at Michigan, Ohio State, at Oregon - with almost no wiggle room.
Even with this schedule, Wisconsin will get to a bowl game. It’ll continue to be one of the top programs in the College Football Playoff era to not make the tournament, but just staying alive is the goal here.
It’ll beat Miami University and Middle Tennessee to start, and it should be able to scratch and claw to six wins.
Set The Wisconsin Win Total At … 5.5
Likely Wins: Miami University, Middle Tennessee
50/50 Games: at Indiana, Illinois, Iowa, Maryland, at Minnesota, Washington
Likely Losses: at Alabama, at Michigan, Ohio State, at Oregon
