It wasn’t exactly like Wisconsin might have wanted it to go, but it came up with a gem of a defensive performance in a 17-0 win over Miami University to get the season going.
Starting quarterback Billy Edwards Jr. suffered a knee injury, but the D took over and the Badgers pulled through. Now they get one more tune-up before going to Alabama.
No one had a worse Week 1 than Middle Tennessee, losing at home to Austin Peay 34-14. The Blue Raiders are better than that, and with expectations at rock bottom, they can let it rip.

The Blue Raiders have decent skill parts to make the Badgers work. Nicholas Vattiato is a veteran quarterback who can get hot. The receiving corps isn’t awful, and there’s a little bit of pop if the offensive line can give everyone time.
Getting defensive pressure on backup Badger quarterback Danny O’Neil is a must. There were several massive issues in the Austin Peay loss, but the defense got behind the line. With that said …
0-for-12. That’s what Middle Tennessee was on third down last week. The offense controlled the clock for just over 21 minutes; there wasn’t a lick of a ground attack, and Austin Peay lived in the Blue Raider backfield.
Wisconsin’s defense came out of the tunnel grouchy. It stuffed the Miami University ground game, allowing just 34 rushing yards, and on third downs … Miami was 0-for-9. However …
The Badgers geared down after Edwards Jr. got hurt, controlled the clock, and didn’t force O’Neil into any tough situations. It worked, but it was also 3-0 with just over 20 minutes to play.
That worked against Miami University, and it’ll work just fine against Middle Tennessee, but this is when the offense has to get cranked up with the Bama D up next. It won’t be amazing, but the Badger attack will look sharper.
