Texas Southern athletics legend passes away at 81

The SWAC and Texas Southern University are mourning the loss of an athletic legend. Long-time Texas Southern trainer John ‘Doc’ Harvey has passed away at the age of 81, per a release by the institution. Harvey spent more than four decades serving Texas Southern University athletics, building a career that stretched from 1974 until his retirement in 2015.

A Houston native, Harvey’s path in athletics began as a student trainer at Jack Yates High School. He earned a bachelor’s degree from Wiley University and later completed a master’s degree at Prairie View A&M University. His professional career included stops in the Aldine and Austin school districts before moving to the collegiate ranks as head athletic trainer at Prairie View A&M. Harvey later returned to Houston, serving with both Houston ISD and Texas Southern while also contributing to professional football organizations, including the Houston Oilers and the Houston Texans.

His contributions to the profession earned widespread recognition. Harvey was the inaugural recipient of the John Harvey Humanitarian Award from the Southwest Athletic Trainers Association and received numerous honors throughout his career, including national service and distinguished trainer awards. He was later inducted into the Texas Southern Athletics, SWAC, and SWATA halls of fame and served on leadership bodies for the National Athletic Trainers’ Association, helping shape the profession beyond the sidelines.

Throughout his tenure at Texas Southern University, Harvey became a fixture within the athletic department and played a key role in mentoring future professionals. Many of the students he trained and guided went on to build careers in athletic training and sports medicine, extending his influence well beyond the university.
