In April 2013, cricket enthusiasts witnessed one of the most unforgettable moments in the history of the T20 format. In the 31st match of the IPL 2013 tournament, Royal Challengers Bengaluru was up against Pune Warriors India. What followed is described below:

Gayle got a hold of the game as Pune Warriors, winning the toss and opting to bowl, faced Chris Gayle. The West Indies legend scored an unbeaten 175 runs off just 66 balls, including 13 fours and 17 sixes in his innings. This is still the highest individual score in T20 cricket, even more than 12 years later.

Several batters have managed to get extremely close but no one yet has breached the 175-run mark. In the more aggressive form of cricket, it seems a few players are showing potential to overhaul this long-standing record.

Five cricketers are given below, who are capable of going past Chris Gayle’s 175 in T20 cricket:

5 Players Who Can Break Chris Gayle’s 175-Run Record in T20s

Abhishek Sharma (India)

Abhishek Sharma is one of the most lethal openers of the modern game of T20 cricket. Abhishek, a fearless player, attacks the bowlers from the first over itself.

In the 172 matches so far played in the T20 format, Abhishek has amassed an impressive 5,070 runs in 168 innings with a jaw-dropping strike rate of 173.51 runs per 100 balls. Abhishek has already notched up eight centuries in the T20 format to prove he can convert good starts

His best score in a T20 match until now has been 148 runs, and with his aggressive playing skills and excellent hitting abilities, Abhishek remains a leading contender for breaking down Gayle's 175-run record.

Finn Allen (New Zealand)

Another opener who bats fearlessly is the New Zealand opening batsman, Finn Allen, who is known for his clean hitting and scoring quickly at the top of the order.

In 52 T20I matches, Allen has managed to score 1,285 runs at a strike rate of 163.27, including two centuries. Apart from international cricket, he has also played 172 matches of T20 cricket and has managed to score 4,881 runs including five centuries.

Allen’s highest T20 score is 151, and this is a proof that the guy has the potential to get close to Gayle’s record. The flat track would be perfect for him to get a bigger score.

Vaibhav Suryavanshi (India)

Vaibhav Suryavanshi is one of the brightest young cricketers in the world. The 14-year-old kid has surprised the world with his courageous batting skills already.

In his 18 T20 games, Suryavanshi has accumulated a staggering 701 runs with an average of 41.23. This includes three centuries. His best knock came in the Rising Stars Asia Cup 2025 when he scored a whopping 144 runs on just 42 deliveries.

Considering his young age, confidence, and way of batting, Vaibhav still has ample time to pursue and even breach the legendary T20 mark of Chris Gayle.

Nicholas Pooran (West Indies)

Nicholas Pooran has vast experience in T20 cricket across the globe. The West Indies star player is known to accelerate his game in no time and punish the opponents at his own will.

Pooran has played 443 T20 matches and has scored 10,371 runs in 416 innings at an average close to 40, including four centuries and 63 half-centuries to his credit. The chances are, if Pooran starts firing early in the innings, his big-hitting abilities might challenge Gayle’s record of 175.

Travis Head (Australia)

Travis Head has emerged as one of the most consistent batters in all formats of the game. His aggressive approach as a batter makes him dangerous in the shortest format of the game.

In 168 T20 matches, Head has accumulated 4,414 runs including two centuries, and it is apparent that he is a serious candidate with the ability to consistently maintain a strike rate of 150+ despite batting long innings. With the right conditions, Head is capable of scoring a record-breaking innings.
