New Zealand fast bowler Adam Milne has been officially ruled out of the upcoming ICC T20 World Cup after sustaining a torn hamstring, dealing a major blow to the Black Caps’ pace attack. The injury occurred while Milne was bowling during the SA20, and further medical scans confirmed that the damage would prevent him from taking part in the global event.
Milne had been working his way back to peak fitness and was considered an important component of New Zealand’s bowling plans, especially given his experience and ability to deliver at high pace in pressure situations. Unfortunately, the timing of the injury means he will miss yet another major tournament after showing promising signs of a strong comeback.
New Zealand head coach Rob Walter admitted the team was deeply disappointed by the setback, highlighting how much effort Milne had put into his preparation. “We’re all gutted for Adam. He’d worked so hard to get himself ready for the tournament and was looking back to his best in his eight games for the Eastern Cape Sunrisers,” Walter said.
He further added, “It’s unfortunate timing for Adam and we wish him a speedy recovery.” The coach’s remarks underline the frustration within the camp, especially with Milne finding rhythm and confidence after an extended battle with injuries.
Milne’s absence is significant given his track record in T20 internationals. Over the years, he has featured in multiple T20 World Cups and has been a consistent wicket-taking option for New Zealand, finishing with 65 wickets in 56 T20Is. His raw pace and experience will be sorely missed in conditions expected to favor fast bowlers.
In response to Milne’s withdrawal, Kyle Jamieson has been drafted into the main squad. Jamieson was initially selected as a travelling reserve and is already with the team on their white-ball tour of India. His inclusion provides New Zealand with a like-for-like pace option, offering bounce, seam movement, and proven big-match temperament.
The tournament, co-hosted by India and Sri Lanka, will now see Jamieson stepping into a crucial role as New Zealand reshuffle their bowling plans ahead of the marquee event.
