For the third time in four games, the Milwaukee Bucks endured a blowout defeat when they suffered a 122-102 home loss to the Oklahoma City Thunder on Wednesday night.
Following the contest, superstar Giannis Antetokounmpo offered some comments on the current state of the Bucks that likely won't silence trade rumors regarding his future.
"We’re not playing hard," Antetokounmpo said, per Steve Megargee of The Associated Press. "We aren’t doing the right thing. We’re not playing to win. We’re not playing together. Our chemistry’s not there. Guys are being selfish, trying to look for their own shots instead of looking for the right shot for the team. Guys trying to do it on their own. At times, I feel like when we’re down 10, down 15, down 20, we try to make it up in one play, and it’s not going to work."
Wednesday's result dropped the 11th-place Bucks to 18-25 on the season. It was the third time since Jan. 13 that Milwaukee had lost a game by at least 18 points.
Antetokounmpo was the subject of constant trade rumors even before it was reported that he requested a move from the Bucks before the ongoing campaign got underway. While he recently said that he will "never" demand a trade and is "invested" in helping the Bucks turn things around, some within the NBA community seem to believe the two-time MVP could have a new basketball home before the Feb. 5 trade deadline arrives.
As recently as Wednesday, James L. Edwards III of The Athletic shared that the New York Knicks "were and will continue to be interested in" Antetokounmpo.
In Wednesday's loss, Antetokounmpo attempted just 11 field goals. He finished the contest with 19 points.
"I’m not the guy that will yell and cuss his teammate out and demand the ball," Antetokounmpo added. "I’ve never done that in my career. But I feel like I’ve played with teammates that kind of understand the gravity that I can cause for our team, in how I can create for teammates and for myself, and how I can help the team be more successful. But maybe for some reason, I don’t understand — maybe because we’re young, maybe because we’re not playing well, maybe because guys think it’s their turn, they want to carry the team on their back and try to turn this around – but I really don’t get it. I really don’t."
Antetokounmpo will look to make more of an offensive impact when the Bucks host the Denver Nuggets (29-15) on Friday night.
