Afghan Players Withdraw From PSL Auction

Several Afghanistan cricketers chose to withdraw from the upcoming Pakistan Super League (PSL) players’ auction amid rising political tensions between the two neighbouring nations. The development came shortly after wicketkeeper-batter Rahmanullah Gurbaz was signed directly by Peshawar Zalmi, a move that triggered widespread criticism on social media.

Reports indicated that a number of well-known Afghan players had initially entered their names for the auction scheduled in Lahore but were later removed from the final list.

Among those who had reportedly registered were Mujeeb Ur Rahman, Mohammad Nabi, Fazalhaq Farooqi, Seddiqullah Atal and Waqar Salamkheil. However, their absence from the final auction pool raised questions. The withdrawals were widely seen as a response to the backlash that followed Gurbaz’s signing, especially given the fragile diplomatic climate between Pakistan and Afghanistan.

Gurbaz Signing Sparks Backlash

The controversy began when Gurbaz agreed to join Peshawar Zalmi ahead of the auction. The move was met with criticism from certain sections of Afghan fans and observers who believed that, given the strained ties between the two countries, such participation was inappropriate. The criticism intensified online, eventually leading Gurbaz to reconsider his involvement.

Reports suggest that the backlash may have influenced other Afghan cricketers to step back from the tournament to avoid similar controversy. PSL CEO Responds to Situation

PSL Chief Executive Officer Salman Naseer addressed the issue and offered clarification. He stated that some Afghan players were indeed part of the auction pool but did not receive bids from franchises. However, he also acknowledged that the prevailing political environment may have played a role in the developments.

Naseer explained that the intense reaction surrounding Gurbaz’s signing and his eventual withdrawal likely contributed to other players distancing themselves from the league. Relations between Pakistan and Afghanistan have remained tense, especially following recent military developments, and some Afghan cricketers had openly criticised the Pakistan government.
