It was a matter of time before Seattle Mariners prospect Colt Emerson was promoted to the majors. That time has come.
Ryan Divish of the Seattle Times reported that the Mariners are promoting Emerson to the major leagues. Divish further added that Emerson is expected to arrive ahead of the Mariners game Sunday night.
A consensus top-25 prospect, Emerson had signed an eight-year, $95 million extension shortly after Opening Day. He had spent the first few weeks of the season in Triple-A, posting a .255/.347/.469 batting line in his 169 plate appearances, hitting seven homers and eight doubles while stealing 10 bases.
Emerson was ranked as the Mariners' top prospect and the ninth-best prospect in baseball by MLB.com entering the 2026 season. He was regarded as having at least average tools in every facet, with plus contact and defense at short. Emerson had been viewed as one of the best pure hitters in the minors, lauded for his ability to put the barrel on the ball and consistently make hard contact.
Emerson appeared to have had a chance to debut earlier this year as shortstop J.P. Crawford had right shoulder inflammation and started the season on the injured list. Instead, another injury, this time to infielder Brendan Donovan, will open the door for Emerson.
If he can perform well during his first look at the majors, he could stick around even when Donovan returns. Donovan has functioned as a utility player for most of his career and could return to that role. Likewise, as Crawford is slated to reach free agency after this season, Emerson has a chance to solidify his place as part of the Mariners' present and future.
