Zimbabwe captain Craig Ervine has been ruled out of the two-match ODI series against Sri Lanka due to a calf injury. In Ervine’s absence, Sean Williams will marshal the Chevrons in the ODI series which kicks off today. Zimbabwe are yet to announce any replacement.
Meanwhile, Zimbabwe’s Brendan Taylor is primed for an international return after being named in the 16-member squad for this series. Taylor has been out of action in the 50-overs format since playing against Ireland in September 2021. The keeper-bat, however, made his international comeback earlier this month, in the second Test against New Zealand in Bulawayo.
Besides Taylor’s return, the pace battery also receives a fillip thanks to the return of fit-again Richard Ngarava and Blessing Muzarabani. Zimbabwe last played in an ODI against Ireland in February, and have now inducted four fresh faces into the mix – Clive Madande, Tony Munyonga, Brad Evans and uncapped seamer Ernest Masuku.
The two ODIs are scheduled for August 29 and 31 at Harare Sports Club.
“This squad has been selected to give us the best chance against a strong Sri Lankan side,” Zimbabwe Convener of Selectors David Mutendera said. “We have combined proven match-winners with players who are hungry to make their mark, and that mix of experience and energy will be crucial as we transition from red-ball cricket to the fast pace of ODIs.”
Head Coach Justin Sammons added: “We’ve just come off a tough red-ball series and now it’s about adjusting to the tempo and intensity of one-day cricket. Sri Lanka are a strong white-ball side and will punish any lapses, so we need to be sharp from ball one.
“Clarity in roles will be key – each player must understand exactly what’s required. Get that right, and I believe we can compete strongly against a very disciplined Sri Lankan outfit.”
