Slow left-arm orthodox bowler Liam Dawson has announced his retirement from first-class cricket with immediate effect. Dawson's illustrious first-class career saw him claim 380 wickets and register 18 centuries. The 36-year-old played four Tests for England. He made his Test debut against India at the MA Chidambaram Stadium in Chennai on December 16.

It was the game that saw Karun Nair score an unbeaten 303, which powered the hosts to an innings and 75-run win. Dawson had registered figures of 2/129 in 43 overs as India piled up a mammoth 759/7 before declaring the innings.

Dawson was announced as the men's Player of the Year at the Professional Cricketers' Association awards in 2024. He also clinched the Overall Domestic MVP and County Championship Player of the Year before earning a recall to join the England Test team last year.

He played his last red-ball game for England in Manchester against India in July last year. Dawson said he was fully committed to playing white-ball cricket for his county, Hampshire.

"I've decided to retire from first-class cricket," Dawson said in a press release. "It's a decision that I haven't taken lightly but I feel for the benefit of prolonging my career in white-ball cricket, the time is right.

"I'm extremely proud to have played over 200 games for Hampshire and have had some amazing memories with so many players over the years. I'm fully committed to playing white-ball cricket for Hampshire and continuing the success we've had.

"To the fans and members who have turned out over the years, I can't thank you enough for your support. Hampshire will always be my home, and I look forward to playing in front of you all at Utilita Bowl very soon."
