South African fast bowler Lungi Ngidi has been ruled out of the upcoming T20I series against England, Cricket South Africa confirmed on September 10. He suffered a hamstring injury during training on Tuesday.

Ngidi will now return home, with Nandre Burger replacing him in the squad. Burger was a part of the ODI squad that won the series 2-1 but he will now join the T20I setup ahead of the second tie in Manchester. The series opener is scheduled for Wednesday with South Africa capping off their tour with the final T20I on Sunday, September 14, at Trent Bridge.

Meanwhile, England have recalled experienced all-rounder Sam Curran to their T20I squad to face South Africa and Ireland while all-format opener Ben Duckett has been afforded rest. Curran’s recall – for the first time to an England white-ball outfit under Brendon McCullum – comes in the wake of another series loss, in the ODIs, to South Africa.

The 27-year-old Curran, who was adjudged Player of the Tournament in England’s last ICC white-ball conquest, wasn’t in the scheme of things for a considerable time now but has earned his recall on merit. He scored 365 runs and picked up 21 wickets in 15 matches of the ongoing T20 Blast and before that, proved central to Oval Invincibles’ title-winning campaign in The Hundred, contributing 238 runs and 12 wickets in nine fixtures.

England have also withdrawn quick Matthew Potts from the Ireland T20Is in order to allow him to play County Championship and put his case forward for selection in the Ashes squad. A spot might be up for the taking on the marquee winter tour following Jamie Overton’s move to give up red-ball cricket indefinitely earlier this month.
